My Personal Experience With Fasting
Before I write my experiences, let me tell you how fasting started for me. I was in the grocery store buying whatever food was on the shelves. When I went to check out my card was declined — this wasn’t an uncommon thing. When I went outside my bank account said negative. This was the first time where I was actually alone and had no money for food. But we will talk about that another day.
So when I started fasting I was not eating for 20 hours a day — for an entire year I was not eating for 3–5 days at the start of every month. I was eating single-ingredient foods and fasting until I exercised. At the time when I first started this I was working in landscaping, which allowed me to exercise in the day, get sunlight, and get paid at the same time — which was really nice. I would have green tea in the morning, coffee on some other days, but most of the fasting days were 20:4 splits. I was eating about 2–3 meals after the fasting window.
Now, this wasn’t really hard for me because I was following the 50 brain cell challenge way before I started this, which is just a decrease in the ingredients that you are consuming. The lower the ingredients, the easier it is to fast. I tested this with eating really high-ingredient foods and going into fasting the next day was twice as hard.
I think fasting for me was really about finally feeling a new form of energy that I was never able to feel before. These were the ketones that I had never really felt because so many of us are eating all day long — our bodies never really go into a fasted state. I actually think, as I’m typing this, I am going to do a 3-day fast.
As you learn about fasting and really dive into it, many people you meet will have done intermittent fasting — half the people you talk to will mention they “kinda fast” by skipping breakfast, but they don’t really intentionally break their fast. I can tell you from a personal perspective: fasting saved my life. Who knew that I was never really hungry for food — I was hungry for knowledge all along.
